A video where we haul the bed up to the second-floor roof and shove it in the bedroom window.

The headboard alone was enough to sell me on this bed. If there had been nothing but the the fancy bit at the top glued to a cardboard refrigerator box, I would have liked it just as much.
Also, I hate footboards like I hate turtlenecks– a lot. So to find an antique bed designed with no footboard at all, and a fancy headboard nearly 7 feet tall, and will accommodate our queen-size mattress… (sort of.) I knew this was the bed I had been waiting for.
Besides, if at some point it turns out I was wrong and I do find a king-size bed? That will be EVEN BETTER. Because I will stack this bed on top of it and make bunkbeds of awesomeness.
As we headed home with the headboard strapped to the roof of the van, I said to Paul – tell me, realistically? Do you think this will actually fit up the stairwell?
Paul said– what? Now you’re a realist?
And I thought to myself– he’s right, who even cares. Maybe I will just stack it in front of The Kingdom Mirror. In fact, that room is underused in general and I should start thinking of it as a warehouse for spare glory… a storage unit for displaced magnificence — who doesn’t need one of those?
Besides, as previously established – I am only the finder. After that? It’s Paul’s show.
We got home late at night and hauled it into the kitchen. Then it just sat there while we waited for our other bed to sell (on craigslist). It took a couple of weeks, considering the holidays and everything.
Paul fixed the break in the footboard, (you would never know, if you were not looking for it closely). And he decided we would skip the fool’s errand of getting it stuck halfway up the stairwell.
So Paul built a ramp/sled up to the front-porch roof outside the bedroom window.

I would guess that I have impressed you with two things:
1– my ability to help. Without helping at all.
2– the extraordinary foresight I showed in marrying Paul.

Of course the REAL question is – if you weren’t happy with the “video shoot”, would you make Paul take the headboard back OUT of the house and DO IT AGAIN? (we all know the answer 😉

Why did he tie a strap around your waist? The headboard had already been pulled up. Did he really think you might fall off the roof? Would you be dangling in mid-air? The rope looked so long that I think you would have hit the ground.

Girl, you are crazy-good! I showed the video to my husband and he loves you as much as I do. (He adored the Kingdom mirror story too!) I wish to god you were my neighbor; things around here would be a lot more interesting!
BTW, if you’re ever struggling to get a box spring up stairs and they just won’t fit, I saw a nice trick on Ask This Old House last week. Couldn’t believe it was that easy!

Well, I couldn’t sleep so I got up at 3:30 a.m. and reread your post and watched the video again. I have watched it a total of three times now and shared it with my husband. Then I started reading the comments and had the best laughs I have had in days. Your posts are amazing, funny, hilarious and all the other adjetives I can think of but so are the comments. Who would believe that I would see a comment by Mary Englebrite (one of my favorite artists) in a blog comment section (some time back). My husband (85) used to do things like that for me but now that we don’t have a truck to haul home treasures in I just have to read about it.

You have Paul ,I have George. We live in a 100 yr.old home too. The three bedrooms are up stairs. If I had thougt about filming him while he wrestled things up the stairs and over the porch roof,I would probably be living in your garage. He’s good but he’s not that good. Now its just the two of us. When something needs to be moved we send out S.O.S. for son and son -in laws. Beautiful bed ,have fun.
