Want to see our kitchen island? I THINK YOU ARE GOING TO LIKE IT. *video*
This is part 1… here is: two, three, four, five, six, seven
Last summer, I saw a posting on Craigslist.
I went to show Paul, and he said– we are definitely not getting a piano.
This is exactly what I was hoping he would say, because who does not love being the one to reveal an exciting plot twist?
I shouted– SURPRISE!
We are DEFINITELY getting a piano!
I thrust my fist into the air— to indicate action and piano-getting.
I said— AT DAWN WE RIDE.
Then I marched up and down the street with my gong, announcing— Here’ye! Here’ye! I SHALL HAVE ALL OF THE GIANT FANCY THINGS.
Also, for the record, only someone who does not read my blog would mistake this for a piano. CLEARLY, this is our kitchen island.
I explained my idea to Paul… at length… which took about five seconds.
Here it is, for your consideration.
IDEA:
Acquire item of giant fanciness.
Put the giant fanciness in the kitchen.
The End.
I guess I did not explain it right, because Paul said – don’t you think a piano in the kitchen might be a little bit… much?
This confused me– a little bit much?
No. I think it will be a LOT much… much like myself.
Paul thought about this. Then he went back and rifled through his rolodex of anticlimactic responses.
He said – well, it’s an interesting idea.
Let’s think about it for a little while.
Stalemate. After impasse. After deadlock.
Fortunately, I am trained for this: this entire house project has been an extended drill session where I’ve eschewed all reasonable housewares and set fire to anything from Homegoods.
And ultimately, I guess Paul forgot to ask himself the one really, really, really important question: If this piano exists, DO I THINK VICTORIA WILL CHOOSE ANYTHING ELSE?

I adore the idea of a piano kitchen island! Perfection!!
The video – String of Pearls, was it? – is charming. 🙂 You and Paul are so cute. 🙂

I wholeheartedly agree – you and Paul are cute! This video proves that Paul doesn’t really mean to go against you. He is secretly on your side. The top hat! Many men wouldn’t do that and be recorded doing that. How wonderful.
Oh, yeah, and the island – LOVELY.

Music is Glen Miller’s “In the Mood”. Which is perfectly appropriate for our girl who is always in the mood for Craigslist and Giant Fancy Things.

Starts hyperventilating…oh that beautiful piano, will you preserve it so someday it might make music again, or *tear* is it going to be stripped? I love you in all things…well mostly. I HAVE to admit it WILL make a gorgeous, big and fancy kitchen island.

It’s brilliant! Old pianos are a great source of fancy legs and nice casework! And this one was FREE. Now, I cannot wait to see how you recycle the harp from this instrument.

I was thinking that the fancy music holder would be perfect as a fancy recipe (or ipad) holder! Free fancy ornate piano as an island – what a fun and creative idea!

In all my 26 years of kitchen designing, I have never seen a piano used as an island and I have to say I love your idea! And every word you write…
April 14, 2015 @ 10:17 am
Thanks for making my day!! Totally awesome!!! I admire your persistence and Paul’s willingness (finally). Can’t wait to see it in the kitchen. Will you remove the guts of the piano, so it provides storage? or perform concerts in the kitchen?
April 14, 2015 @ 10:17 am

Love, LOVE this idea!! I wish i had thought of it when i remodeled my kitchen. I play the piano, so the thought of becoming a “collector” some might call me a “hoarder” of pianos has always being my dream! Brilliant.
April 14, 2015 @ 10:27 am
That man does surely love you…what a beautiful piece of furniture. I want to play it, even though I barely know how to play a piano.
