Building drawers inside the piano!! DIY repurposed kitchen island, pt 5. *video*
if you’re new to the piano, start here! This is part 5… here is: part one, two, three, four, six, seven
After we decided to put drawers in the piano, I spent a few days doing mockups… because I know nothing of building furniture, I was not restricted by things like feasibility.
Paul looked at my idea and said– super! I’ll get right on it!
No.
What Paul really said was – why don’t we just have open space? Then you can throw whatever you want in there.
I felt flames coming out of my eyeballs, because I CANNOT BE THE VOICE OF REASON… It violates all acceptable-world-function.
But then, one day, Paul decided that he would make the drawers.
I would like to think this is because he realized the genius of my idea which will soon qualify me for the Noble Prize in creative kitchen design.
But it is more likely that he simply completed the mental circuit of: why-is-Victoria-being-so-…-wait-an-idea-…-hmmm-that-is-interesting-…-what-if-I-…-reverse-engineer-this-part-…-I-could-also-do-this-other-thing-…-where-is-my-pencil?
From then on, he proceeded to act as though HE had thought of the drawers. He even said things like– these drawers are going to be GREAT!! You will be able to fit so much stuff in them!!
As though this was not my original point.
However, he has totally redeemed himself… reversing his original advocacy for bowling alley storage, he has taken my idea and improved upon it 10,000%.
So I guess when the Nobel Prize committee calls me, I will be forced to share the glory and press coverage with Paul.
This will be twice as much work for me, because I will have to write his acceptance speech, as well as my own… I fear that, left to his own devices, Paul might fail to acknowledge my position as Kitchen Muse and general bringer of splendor and fabulousness to his life.
Everything you are looking at still needs finished drawer fronts, but I could not wait to show you!!!
The drawer fronts are where the keyboard used to be… to get a sense of how the piano was put together, go here and see us deconstructing it.
Now for the boring part.
Now for a video… I need some more time to edit my dissertation on designing and building piano storage.

Wow! That was great!! Does Paul own all of those tools? I thought he just did your bidding, but apparently that requires quite a bit of hardware!

Jaw-droppingly well done! Loved the peek at Elvis in the video, too – personally thought her cameo appearance should have included the dulcet tones of her meow dubbed in – it could have been and Elvis&Elvis duet then:)

Umm… I feel stunned. I think I must make up a new word to describe you and your husband. Fantabulous? No… .that’s not enough. I cannot love this idea more. I have been in since you said “piano = kitchen island”. Cannot wait to to see the end results – there has never been a better idea. 🙂

Love your videos. Paul is pretty dreamy too 😉 You are heading to blogger stardom with this whole piano-as-an-island idea. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

I’ve been reading the piano saga with great anticipation, knowing that the piano to kitchen island conversion would be wonderful. But this is truly beyond the scope of my imaginings. Well done!
You are one creative thinker! And it seems you have the most perfect match in Paul, you are so lucky to have a husband with the ability to take your ideas and run with them. Looking forward to the next installment.
Elvis supervising in the back ground was too cute.
Regards.

VEB, you are fulfilling your design destiny! 😀 This is one AMAZING project, from one amazing idea. I often “see” things in my head as other than what they were originally created to be; so many times others won’t “get it”. Then, you show them, and it’s like, OH MY GOSH, that’s awesome! How did you think of that? And I say, I don’t know how to not think like that. Haha
Girlfriend, that piano-island is going to be totally fabulous. You are making your mark with this one! (And Paul is too!) What a blessing to have him to help bring your great ideas to life in your home. Congrats.

Have you ever in your whole life been able to slide the flimsy back or bottom piece into the grooves, on say, an Ikea dresser, or Home Depot shelving unit for your play room? No, because they never just slide into the grooves. Yet, Paul makes a box, that is ostensibly perfectly square, and they just la la la, slides the bottom right in. I’m completely stunned. And awed. Maybe the other way around. Anyway, I had to watch the video like 6 times. You are a lucky duck, and you know it!

In Darth Vader voice,”Impressive. Most impressive.” This video is genius in action. You and Paul are an amazing team, but we all recognize that none of this could come to pass without Elvis supervising. Seriously, your piano island will definitely be a completely functional showstopper. Team VEB rocks!

What I want to know is WHEN is someone going to put the two of you on television? For Pete’s Sake, it would be one hundred times more entertaining and informative than 90% of what is on now!

Ann (and VEB), I totally agree that VEB and Paul should:
Have a sit-com; be on the cover of a DIY/Design magazine; have their OWN DIY magazine; write for David Letterman….oh wait, too late for that.
