Planning

Meet our kitchen… the previous owner’s DIY masterpiece.

The kitchen design is our next project… a challenge in any old house.
I’m not talking about the construction, the remodeling, or the cabinet installation.  Yet.

Just the design.

It’s going to be Kitchen Week here for a while.  Like Fashion Week in NYC.  But with more hysteria, drugs, and nervous breakdowns.

Also, we can all just wear sweatpants.

I’m going to attempt to do the kitchen posts in an orderly fashion:

  1. Introduction—where you meet my kitchen and have wine and cheese with the current layout.
  2. Now that you’ve met the kitchen, we can talk about it behind its back… I’ll show you the issues that we have to work around, and talk about an eyesore that theoretically has resale value.
  3. We go shopping!!  I show you stuff I like.  We try on stuff we cannot afford.  We say catty things about thinner, better-dressed kitchens, and get a pedicure.
  4. We discuss the seventeen-million layout options I’ve come up with so far.  I ask you to help me make sense of cabinet arrangement, stove location, and the possibility of ignoring all wisdom, in favor of open shelving and marble countertops.

So here it is, meet our kitchen.

Try not to be jealous…  It has lots of awesome customizations that yours doesn’t.

Benary Giant Zinnia… best flower ever.

When we first moved in, we had this giant rock on our front lawn.  It was just one of the many unexplainable objects d’art collected by the previous owner.

Benary's Giant Zinnias. Best cutting flower. SO easy to grow!!

Landscaping was low on our priority list, but the rock irritated me. So I put it on craigslist. Anytime I give something away on craigslist, I am astounded by the tsunami of people who want the very thing I am getting rid of.  The rock was no exception.

Don’t You Love The Overgrown Louisiana Bayou Look? – Little Edie Beale

The day we moved in, our front porch looked like this:

Like maybe we were in the jungle.  Or Key West.  It was really private—which I loved.   It had an overgrown, Grey Gardens vibe.  Which was pleasing in a dramatic way.  Like I might become a person who wears scarves and doesn’t clean the house, and eats tinned caviar for dinner.

Concealed trapway toilet. (Failure to think of a charming title.)

Incase I was deluding myself that my blog resembled a luxe-lifestyle design site, this photo should set me straight.

This is the concealed trapway, skirted, one-piece toilet we chose…

American Standard Tropic,Concealed Trapway Right Height™ Elongated, One-Piece, ADA Toilet. Similar to Cadet 3 or Champion.

If you’d told me I would start a blog, and write a post about a toilet. I would not have thought that could be correct.  But?  This is a renovation blog, so not only am I writing about it. I am excited.  About a toilet.  This seems vaguely sad, but there you have it.

What I AM Getting.

I wanted a medicine cabinet that was completely recessed—which is easy enough.  But I also wanted something tall… very tall.  To be specific, four feet tall.

I love this.  I love how it’s flush with the wall.  I love the white trim.
And as always, I love a tall mirror.

I suggested to Paul, that he could make this…  How hard can it be?

What I’m NOT Getting.

Designing our bath storage was a challenge.  I wanted an extremely tall, oversized medicine cabinet.  I wanted something recessed, with a huge mirror and glass shelves.  Something that would reflect lots of light and compliment a vintage-style bath.

Clearly, they made this just for me: Roburn, Fairhaven:

Roburn, Fairhaven, large medicine cabinet... the inspiration for the DIY cabinet we ended up making.

I would clarify why I love it—but I assume its appeal is self-explanatory.
