Completed Medicine Cabinet. Awesomeness.

“I am not a cabinet maker.”   Is what Paul said to me months ago, when I showed him my ideas for a giant, recessed, extra-tall, medicine cabinet.  He explained that he is not a woodworker, or a finish carpenter, or an elderly Amish man.

Don’t You Love The Overgrown Louisiana Bayou Look? – Little Edie Beale

The day we moved in, our front porch looked like this:

Like maybe we were in the jungle.  Or Key West.  It was really private—which I loved.   It had an overgrown, Grey Gardens vibe.  Which was pleasing in a dramatic way.  Like I might become a person who wears scarves and doesn’t clean the house, and eats tinned caviar for dinner.

Concealed trapway toilet. (Failure to think of a charming title.)

Incase I was deluding myself that my blog resembled a luxe-lifestyle design site, this photo should set me straight.

This is the concealed trapway, skirted, one-piece toilet we chose…

If you’d told me I would start a blog, and write a post about a toilet. I would not have thought that could be correct.  But?  This is a renovation blog, so not only am I writing about it. I am excited.  About a toilet.  This seems vaguely sad, but there you have it.

A Custom Medicine Cabinet.

So after I showed Paul my dream-cabinets, I suggested that he build what I had in mind.  It doesn’t really look that complicated.  But Paul assured me that  “just a square box,” does not imply simplicity.

Paul explained it would be difficult.  And that he is not a cabinet maker.
So I got some estimates for a custom-made cabinet… at which point, Paul decided that actually, on second thought—he is a cabinet maker.

Below is when the new wall was just being framed out.  I forgot to take a photo from the inside of the bath.  This is the outside, but shows the outline of the cabinet.

Paul sheetrocked the entire wall.

And then cut out the space for the cabinet.  The wall on the right will house the sink and a large mirror.

Once he hung the door, I danced a little jig.  It turned out fantastically.  Paul has unintentionally signed himself up for many more complicated projects.

What I AM Getting.

I wanted a medicine cabinet that was completely recessed—which is easy enough.  But I also wanted something tall… very tall.  To be specific, four feet tall.

I love this.  I love how it’s flush with the wall.  I love the white trim.
And as always, I love a tall mirror.

I suggested to Paul, that he could make this…  How hard can it be?
